Director of Communications and Public Relations

GlobeScan, a leader in stakeholder intelligence and engagement, has an immediate opening for the position of Director of Public Relations and Communications in its Toronto office, located at 145 Front Street East, Suite 102, Toronto, Ontario M5A 1E3.

The successful candidate will manage, oversee and develop strategies to raise awareness of GlobeScan’s public profile externally. Responsibilities include delivering global thought leadership, campaigns and events, establishing relationships with members of the media pitching stories to publications and monitoring media coverage; identifying key messages and communicating them to key stakeholder audiences.

This is a key role in the communications processes for the company and is highly instrumental in driving the organization’s corporate reputation and standing.

Principal responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for creating, implementing and measuring the success of a comprehensive public relations and communications program that will enhance GlobeScan’s image and position the organization externally.
  • Plans, directs, and implements GlobeScan’s external communications activities.
  • Responsible for developing a messaging hierarchy and ensuring that key, strategic messages are communicated effectively to target audiences.
  • Oversees the production of external materials such as press releases, opinion articles, blogs and newsletters. Rewrites or modifies copy to clarify meaning and to conform to GlobeScan’s corporate style guidelines and editorial policy.
  • Creates, or acts as liaison with clients and / or partners/suppliers that produce, public relations materials, and marketing collateral.
  • Provides consultancy and advice as needed to support client projects with a communications strategy recommendation requirement.
  • Delivery of training and on-the-job learning to provide GlobeScan staff with a solid grounding in public relations, including campaign design, best practice and media relations.

Minimum Job requirements:

  • Mastery of PR – including story creation techniques and models.
  • Exemplary quality of thinking, analytical ability and problem solving in terms of managing corporate reputation.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of working in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Business.
  • Must be a highly effective PR and communications expert.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading skills are essential, including ability to present concepts verbally.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Superior project management and time management skills.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude.
  • Experience of working in complex virtual team environments both inside and outside of the business across multiple levels in organizations and the not-for-profit sector.
  • Experience of working internationally with large multi-national organizations.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in marketing, communications or public relations with demonstrated success in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, or social sciences required.
  • Membership in IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) and IABC accreditation or similar is desirable.

Terms of employment

This is a permanent, full-time position. The position requires a minimum of 30 hours per week, but additional hours may be required to successfully perform the duties. The annual salary for the position is $65,000.00. Benefits include eligibility to participate in GlobeScan’s comprehensive Group Health & Dental Benefits Plan; and company Registered Retirement Savings Plan.
