Global Poll on Internet Access

Methodology

In total 27,973 citizens in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone between November 30, 2009 and February 7, 2010. Polling was conducted for BBC World Service by GlobeScan and its research partners in each country.

In Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Philippines, Thailand and Turkey urban samples were used.

The margin of error per country ranges from +/-2.1 to 6.9 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

In Brazil the survey was conducted in Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Curitiba, Florianopolis, Goiânia, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and São Paulo, representing 16% of the total national adult population.
In Chile the survey was conducted in 80 cities, representing 63% of the national adult population. The cities were located in the Aisen del General Carlos Ibanes del Campo, Antofagasta, Araucania, Arica y Parinacota, Atacama, Bio Bío, Coquimbo, Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins, Los Lagos, Los Rios, Magellanes y la Antartica Chilena, Maule, Santiago Metropolitan,Tarapacá, and Valparaiso regions.
In China the survey was conducted in Beijing, Beiliu, Chengdu, Dujiangyan, Fenyang, Fuyang, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Manzhouli, Quanzhou, Qujing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shuangcheng, Wuhan, Xi’an, Xining, and Zhengzhou, representing 45% of the total national adult population.
In Costa Rica the survey was conducted in Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Liberia, Limón, Puntarenas, and San José, representing 13% of the total national adult population.
In Egypt the survey was conducted in Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, and Shoubra Al Khima, representing 22% of the total national adult population.
In El Salvador the survey was conducted in Cojutepeque, Colón, San Miguel, San Salvador, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, Usulután, and Zacatecoluca, representing 15% of the total national adult population.
In Guatemala the survey was conducted in Chimaltenango, Chiquimula, Cobán, Escuintla, Guatemala City, Huehuetenango, Jutiapa, Mazatenango, Puerto Barrios, Quetzaltenango, and San Marcos, representing 14% of the total national adult population.
In Honduras the survey was conducted in Comayagua, Danli, El Progreso, La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula, Santa Barbara, and Tegucigalpa, representing 26% of the total national adult population.
In Mexico the survey was conducted in the 16 largest cities and media market regions, constituting 40% of the national adult population and 80% of the residential telephone land lines.
In Nicaragua the survey was conducted in León, Managua, Masaya, and Matagalpa, representing 23% of the total national adult population.
In Panama the survey was conducted in Aguadulce, Almirante, Boquete, Bugaba, Changuinola, Chitré, Colón, David, Las Tablas, Nata, Panama, and Santiago, representing 22% of the total national adult population.
In the Philippines the survey was conducted in the National Capital Region, representing 27% of the total urban adult population.
In Thailand the survey was conducted in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, Khon Kaen, Lampang, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhom Ratchasima, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Songkla representing 13% of the total national adult population.
In Turkey the survey was conducted in Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Diyarbakir, Erzurum, Istanbul, Izmir, Konya, Samsun, and Zonguldak, representing 53% of the total urban adult population.
